These photos were taken during a long month of August in the city of Saint Brieuc. Exploring unknown territory can be disorientating and one feels the need to build familiar reference points so as not to get lost. It was here, on the outskirts of the city, that I became familiar with my surroundings; ordinary landscapes, satellite towns and megastores often near a cement artery uniting all the ideals of the American dream: house, car, work. The manufacture of desire.
Attracted by the familiarity of the residential neighborhoods, shopping centres and people orbiting them, I captured a world where the unique thing is not its diversity but rather its tendency to homogenise. A world led by the baton of superficial capitalism. Where the housing estates simulate the ideal city, free of litter, noise, foul odours and contact with the poor. And where the mega shopping centres become the true epicenter of cultural and social entertainment.
A way of life where quality of life depends on the money you spend and the leisure time you have. How much you own and how much more you could own. Thus forgetting our most important asset: our lives, our people. Where the real investment should be.
